The issue of recognition of break-away republics South Ossetia and Abkhazia has not yet been included in the agenda of the session of the “chamber of representatives” which opened today, but it is considered by the commission.

It has been stated by journalists of the “chamber of representatives” of the “national assembly” Uladzimir Andreichanka.

“We have received requests for recognition of these republics. We should study their economic and political consequences,” Andreichanka stated.

The speaker noted that petitions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are received by the commission on international affairs of the lower chamber. Answering the question whether an address with an alternative request had been received, not to recognize independence of these republics, Andreichanka said he didn’t see such requests.

To the additional question whether it would be possible that the recognition of the two break-away republics would still be considered at spring session, Andreichanka said:

“We all live by hopes. It would be difficult to live otherwise. Let’s hope”.

As we have informed, independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia has been recognized only by Russia and Nicaragua. Representatives of a number of countries including Alyaksandr Lukashenka stated their support to Russia in the issue of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia; however none of them recognized independence of the republics officially.

The European Union many times stated that the decision on development of the dialogue between Europe and the official Minsk would depend in particular on the treatment of the issue of recognition of the break-away republics situated on the territory of Georgia.

In the end of January 2009 the head of the South Ossetia Eduard Kokojty stated to “Komsomolskaya Pravda”:

“Lukashenka says that he is to keep his word; that the recognition is to take place in the near future. We talked informally during the funeral ceremony of Alexiy II: me, Bagapsh and Lukashenka”.
