Cars with portraits of Yury Zakharanka, kidnapped on May 7, 1999, on window glasses appeared in Minsk on May 6.
“This is one of available forms of informing people about the problem that has been painful and bleeding for 10 years,” leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka said. “The Belarusian politics remains moral while there are people who remember the kidnapped. If we keep silence, it will mean indifference and dissimulation have filled our hearts. Belarus will never become a democratic European country with such a “consumer basket.”
The former interior minister and one of the opposition leaders Yury Zakharanka disappeared in May 1999.
The international community thinks high-ranking Belarusian officials, among them former minister of internal affairs Uladzimir Navumau, former secretary of the Security Council Viktar Sheiman, former commander of the special purpose division Dzmitry Paulichenka, and former interior minister Yury Sivakou, are involved in disappearance of Yury Zakharanka and other opposition leaders.
