A year ago, EU High Representative Javier Solana visited Belarus at the end of February 2009. It is considered that it was the moment when “liberalization” in relations between the west and the last dictatorship of Europe started.

The European Union lifted a ban on contacts with the cruel and repressive regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, who is suspected of involvement in abductions and killings of opponents and punishes all dissent in the country. The Belarusian dictator has met with Pope Benedict XVI, President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, Prime Minister of Italia Silvio Berlusconi, and European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Foreign Minister of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski and other European politicians. Here are the results of the “new” EU’s policy.
