Hrodna veterans ask to rename website “Belorusski Partizan”

Veterans of the Hrodna region are indignant at using the words “Belarusian guerilla” in the name of an independent media outlet.

BelTA news agency learnt this from Ivan Tustau, the chairman of the Hrodna region council of the Belarusian Association of Veterans.

“On behalf of all former guerillas and underground members of the Hrodna region express our indignation against the use of the words “Belarusian guerilla” as a name of a website that doesn’t express opinions of the war veterans on various aspects of our state,” he said. “The words “Belarusian guerilla” are scared for every Belarusian, they reflect the heroic struggle our people with the Nazi occupants. This is our country’s brand name, which figures in the history as a republic of guerillas.”

As Hrodna veterans think the website “Belorusski Partizan” (Belarusian Guerilla) harms the image of the Belarusian state and should change the name. Only the websites with content about the history of the guerilla and underground movement in Belarus and patriotic upbringing can bear such a name. In this respect veterans sent a letter to the Ministry of Information asking to solve a question with renaming.

We remind that the newspaper “Respublika” published a letter of A. Slabada, the head of the Minsk region branch of the Belarusian Association of Veterans, Hero of Socialist Labour, honourary citizen of the Minsk region. He also said an electronic media outlet has no right to use the words, sacred for the war veterans.
