Belarus: ahead of schedule presidential elections?

Aliaksandr Lukashenko has signed a decree about conducting extraordinary parliament session on the 7th of September. In Minsk, it is not excluded that the date of Presidential elections which can be conducted before term, will be appointed during this session.

According to Belarusian Constitution and Electoral Code elections of Belarus President should take place before the 6th of February, 2011. An expert of analytical center “Strategy” Valery Karbalevich informed that Belarusian authorities actually have a mature decision on conducting ahead of schedule presidential elections. Karbalevich bound it directly with Russian factor. He reminded that Minsk will be faced with tough negotiations with Russia about gas and oil prices for Belarus. “It will be for sure accompanied by hard confrontation, and in mass media as well ”, noted the expert. According to his words, Lukashenko would like to be re-elected for the following five-year term before the new stage of aggravation of relations with Russia, which besides all, is fraught with serious worsening of economic situation in Belarus.

In connection with the coming Presidential elections, Belarusian opposition is starting mass actions with a demand of conducting international investigation on the facts of disappearance of authority opponents in 90-th years. In Minsk, on the 16th of August mass demonstration and rally under the slogan “We demand international investigation of cases of the missing persons” are planned. The organizers of protest action are civil campaign “European Belarus” (Leader is Andrei Sannikov) and “Tell the Truth!”(Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu), Belarusian Social democratic Party “Gramada” (Stanislau Shushkevich), Belarusian left party “Fair World”(Syargey Kalyakin), Belarusian National Front (Alyaxey Yanukevich).

Analytics in Minsk suppose that alternative candidates of Lukashenko from opposition are leader of “European Belarus” Andrei Sannikov, leader of a civil party “Tell the Truth!” Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, and also Deputy Chairman of United civil party Yaraslau Ramanchuk. All the three candidates lay claim to Russian support.
