There are enough facts, evidence and documents for that.
Belarusian democrats have called upon the UN Security council to address the problem of disappeared opposition leaders in Belarus and guarantee international investigation of the fates of the abducted. Chrter97.org has asked the leader of “European Belarus” civil campaign Andrei Sannikov to comment on this initiative.
“We want to successfully insist on international investigation of the cases of the disappeared central figures and public leaders of Belarus, as 11 years have demonstrated that the Belarusian authorities are hindering a real investigation in every possible way, though there are enough facts, witnesses and documents concerning the crimes for making the names of masterminds and perpetrators of crimes public even today. It is clear such actions of Lukashenka’s regime confirm involvement of higher officials to these crimes.
As long as Belarus is a member of the UN, it is obliged to furnish an account on any claims held against the state relating human rights violations. As it follows from our letter, the official authorities do not present any answers to indirect inquiries about these crimes. We hope that today, when Russian mass media have publicized the information about the crimes for the first time, and connected it with Lukashenka’s dictatorship, new opportunities for setting up an international commission on the cases of disappeared in Belarus would appear. I would like to stress that Russia is the chair of the UN Security Council in August 2010. And it well can initiate discussion on the issue of crimes in Belarus in the most influential organization of the world. We are interested exactly in the things we mentioned in our appeal – in an unbiased investigation of the cases of the disappeared leaders and public figures of our country,” Andrei Sannikov said.
