Head of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek condemned the conduct of the Belarusian authorities in the case of Zmicier Bandarenka, in his statement for Polish Radio website.

Belarusian dissident Zmicier Bandarenka is to be operated on Tuesday, and then without proper rehabilitation, will be sent to penal colony which may cripple him for all further life– alarmed the Bandarenka family.

- The way the Belarusian authorities treated Mr. Bandarenka is hideous and inhuman. He has serious problems with his spine, he needs consultation of the specialist and rehabilitation. Further, unwarranted detention in prison will only worsen his health condition and could even lead to permanent disability – stated the head of the European Parliament.

- Mr. Bandarenka is among many thousands of nameless heroes, fighting for freedom, democracy and a better future for all Belarusians. Their attitude requires the highest appreciation and strong support - added Buzek.

Belarusians’ place is in Europe

In his statement Jerzy Buzek once again called on authorities in Minsk for the immediate release of Mr. Bandarenka and all political prisoners. - Their place is not in isolation, but among family and friends. True leaders listen to the voice of its citizens, while the dictators throw them into prison – added the head of Parliament.

He stressed that the European Parliament has been on the side of Belarusians for many years and has always supported their democratic aspirations. - Belarusians deserve that the future of their homeland would be among the free and democratic European countries.
