Syarhei Kavalenka: I’ll continue hunger strike until sentence reversed

Mother, brother and son of Syarhei Kavalenka visited him in Minsk remand prison in Valadarski Street, where the republican prison hospital is situated.

“He hardly managed to come for a meeting. He is skin and bone, very weak. He needs urgent medical assistance in the conditions of a good civil hospital, he does not trust prison doctors,” said the mother of the political prisoner Lidziya Kavalenka.

As said by Syarhei Kavalenka’s brother Vitaly, the prisoner is not going to stop the hunger strike, until the illegal verdict vacated, Radio Svaboda informs.

“Sergei is really very week, but morally he is strong as never before. He called upon Belarusians to fight for independence of their motherland and its national symbols. Syarhei expressed his special gratitude to all those who had been supporting him, who helps his relatives, and personally Zyanon Paznyak for solidarity with him,” Vitaly Kavalenka said.

With some breaks, Syarhei Kavalenka is on hunger strike since mid-December. I n February he stopped eating completely. The prisoner has lost more than 30 kilograms of weight over the hunger strike. The activist of the Conservative Christian Party Belarusian Popular Front Syarhei Kavalenka was found guilty of probation terms violation. He had been sentenced to 2 years and a month in a penal colony for hoisting a white-red-white flag on a New Year Tree in Vitsebsk.
