The US President called for ‘restoring fairness’.

US President Joe Biden has urged the Georgian authorities to enter a dialogue with the opposition and ‘restore the fairness of the elections’ after the vote to elect a new Georgian parliament on October 26, the results of which the opposition forces did not recognize.

Biden's statement was quoted by the White House.

The US president expressed ‘deep concern’ about Georgia's retreat from democracy, in particular the adoption of legislation that ‘mirrors Russian laws that restrict fundamental freedoms and narrow the space for independent civil society organisations’.

‘Georgia's recent parliamentary elections on October 26 were marred by numerous documented abuses of administrative resources and voter intimidation and coercion,’ he stated.

Biden called on the Georgian government to investigate transparently all election violations, repeal laws restricting freedom of assembly and expression, and ‘begin an immediate inclusive dialogue with all political forces in Georgia to restore the integrity of the elections.’

‘We call on all parties to respect strictly the rule of law and fundamental freedoms that remain the foundation for Georgia's Euro-Atlantic future,’ the US president concluded.

As reported, opposition parties do not recognise the results of the parliamentary elections, saying Georgian Dream stole them. The opposition called for protests.
