He faces life imprisonment.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), together with foreign partners and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, conducted an operation in which they detained the Kremlin's ideologist of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Chistilin.
The SSU reported this on Telegram.
It is noted that the defendant is an assistant to the former adviser to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Sergei Glazyev, who was one of the main “moderators” of the seizure of the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the developer of the Information Warfare Strategy, which justified the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
According to the Ukrainian special service, during 2016-2024, Chistilin prepared a number of “analytical materials” for the Kremlin, in which he supported Russian aggression and the “integration” of the temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine into Russia.
He also provided assistance to Russian special services and wrote publications aimed at carrying out information sabotage against Ukraine.
In addition, Chistilin took an active part in promoting the Kremlin's interests abroad, in particular, he organized interference in the electoral processes in Eastern and Central European countries in favor of the Russian Federation.
According to the SSU, allegedly acting on behalf of Ukrainian society, the defendant participated in “round tables” in European countries, where he disseminated Russian narratives, hoping to reduce support for Ukraine from Western partners.
After Chistilin's participation in one of these “round tables”, he was detained in cooperation with Moldovan law enforcement officers when he tried to return to Moscow through the territories of third countries.
Chistilin is currently in custody and has received suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine at once:
▪ high treason committed under martial law (Part 2 of Article 111);
▪ justification, recognition of the legality, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, glorification of its participants (Part 3 of Article 436-2).
According to the SSU, the facts of their assistance to the GRU of the Russian Federation are currently being documented, in particular in creating mechanisms to circumvent the sanctions imposed against Russia.
Chistilin faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
