Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have announced the creation of a trilateral secretariat.
The alliance of the United States, Japan and South Korea opposes “the dangerous and destabilizing cooperation between North Korea and Russia”. This was stated by US President Joe Biden on Friday, November 15, during a meeting with the leader of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Yun Seok-yol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Deutsche Welle reports.
“Japan, the ROK and the United States strongly condemn the decisions of the leaders of the DPRK and Russia to dangerously expand Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine,” the three countries emphasized in a joint statement.
Shigeru Ishiba took office in October, so the meeting in such a composition took place for the first time, Reuters reported.
Trilateral Secretariat Established
After the talks, Washington, Seoul and Tokyo announced the establishment of a trilateral secretariat to formalize the format and ensure that this is not just a “series of meetings,” US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on board Air Force One with Biden.
The rapprochement between Tokyo and Seoul is considered one of Biden’s diplomatic achievements amid the two countries’ difficult history of relations following the Japanese colonial rule in Korea from 1910 to 1945, Reuters reported. The American leader expressed hope for long-term cooperation.
Biden Warns of Significant Political Change
Joe Biden warned at the APEC summit of a coming era of political upheaval. “We are now at a point of significant political change,” he warned.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un on November 15 ordered the mass production of kamikaze drones to begin as soon as possible.
According to Reuters, North Korea launched drones over South Korea, specifically over Seoul and in the no-fly zone around the office of South Korean President Yun Seok-yul.
The Republic of Korea was forced to deploy air defenses to shoot down the drones.
