‘All The Products Went To Russia’

Belarusians are left without dairy products.

There are problems with the availability of quality dairy products in Belarus. A reader told Charter97.org about this:

— My husband and I start our mornings with a run to the shops (fortunately, we are pensioners and have time for it). In the morning, at least, there is hope of buying good and inexpensive dairy products.

We go into the shop and see that there is no “Lyakhavichy Milk” or butter. Are we really too late?! Then we thought — maybe we came too early, the dairy products have not yet been delivered!?

I asked the saleswoman about the reason for the absence of the goods we needed. The answer shocked us.

— No, — she says, — they have not brought any and will not bring any.

— And where did it go? Don’t the cows give milk?

— No, everything is fine with the cows, but all the products went to Russia. Haven't you heard that the butter has disappeared there?! So they sent all the products there.

Nobody thinks about the people. And how can they think if for Lukashenka there is only “the people”. And the “people” will make ends meet on whey. Butter is sold only with 60% fat content, and milk — with 1.5%.

We don't buy it yet. We are waiting, maybe something will change for the better. We buy expensive pasteurized milk with the thought: “When will this absurdity end?...”
