Wave Of ‘Political’ Arrests Takes Place In Homel

Some of the former activists have been arrested for a month, some - under criminal prosecution.

The wave of ‘political’ arrests, which took place in Homel in late October - early November, did not end with the usual ‘days of arrest’ and fines for ‘subscriptions’. As it became known to ‘Flagshtok,’ most of the detainees are still being held in custody, with some transferred to pre-trial detention centres and charged under criminal articles.

‘We can not disclose the names of the repressed and the charges they are facing, but we can state that more than ten people have been detained, among whom there are former political prisoners,’ the publication writes.

It is noted that most of the detainees are people who have not been active in recent years, but are known as participants in the democratic movement even before the 2020 protests.

So far it is known about at least two criminal cases and the fact that some of the detainees have already been sentenced to administrative arrest three times in a row for allegedly having subscriptions in social networks to pages declared ‘extremist’.

For example, this was the case with Maryja Tulzhankova, who was once again sentenced on November 25 - her case appeared in the schedule of the court of Tsentralny District Court of Homel. Judge Aliaksandr Piskunou made the decision. In almost all other cases, the trials of ‘political’ detainees were not included in the schedule and they were tried without publicity.
