Including land mines.
The administration of US President Joe Biden is preparing a new arms package for Ukraine worth 725 million dollars.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to two unnamed US officials.
According to the agency's interlocutor familiar with the plan, the Biden administration plans to provide a variety of weapons from the US stockpile. These include land mines, drones, Stinger missiles and ammunition for HIMARS high-mobility artillery rocket systems. It is expected that the package will also include cluster munitions.
A formal announcement of the new aid package could come to Congress as early as Monday. The filling and size of that package could change in the coming days before being signed by Biden.
‘The United States has not exported land mines for decades, and their use is controversial because of the potential harm to civilians. Although more than 160 countries have signed a treaty banning their use, Kyiv has been asking for them since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in early 2022,’ the agency stressed.
Russian troops are known to use such weapons on the front line.
The mines that will be sent to Ukraine are ‘unstable’ mines, with a feeding system that only works for a short time. Unlike old landmines, they will not threaten civilians for an indefinite period of time.
