There were violent clashes with the police.
On Friday evening, opposition supporters took to the streets in Tbilisi and other Georgian cities to protest the results of the parliamentary elections, which, according to the Central Election Commission, were won by the pro-Russian ruling party Georgian Dream.
In particular, footage from the Georgian capital has appeared online, showing protesters trying to open the gates of the parliament building. In response, security forces use water cannons, knocking protesters off their feet with a stream of water.
“At this moment, several protesters, despite the water cannon operating from the courtyard, are trying to open the gates to the Georgian Parliament on Chichinadze,” Tbilisi life writes.
It is also reported that the water that is being poured on the protesters from water cannons contains pepper. Before the dispersal of the protesters by water cannons, special forces used pepper spray.
The special forces tried to push the protesters away from the parliament building, the protesters, in turn, began to light fires, meeting the security forces. Georgian publics note the harshness of the police actions not only against the protesters but also against journalists. In particular, it is reported that a film crew from the Pirveli TV channel was beaten.
Meanwhile, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called on police officers to refrain from using force against fellow citizens.
