Russia launched airstrikes on the Syrian city of Aleppo for the first time since 2016. Rebels have reached the center of Aleppo.

This was reported by Reuters.

Rebels began an offensive in the direction of Aleppo on Wednesday, November 27. By the end of the day on Friday, their forces had entered different areas of the city.

According to Reuters, the Syrian army was ordered to carry out a "safe withdrawal" from the main areas of Aleppo, where Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels had entered. The Syrian authorities closed the Aleppo airport and all roads leading to the city.

It is noted that the rebels have already captured half of Aleppo. They have taken control of important government buildings, police and state security headquarters. Corresponding footage is being published online.

Russian and Syrian aircraft attacked Aleppo on the night of November 30. AFP notes that this is the first time since 2016 that Russian aircraft have struck Aleppo. Cities and villages that the rebels had captured the day before were also bombed.

It is reported that 20 members of the al-Qaeda-linked Syrian group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham were killed as a result of the bombings and ground attacks.

According to military sources, Russia has promised Syria additional military aid, with weapons to begin arriving within 72 hours.
