Details.
The Israeli army carried out an operation during which it struck targets from the air that belong to Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters in Syria. The head of the group's intelligence unit Mahmoud Mohammed Shaheen was eliminated.
This is reported by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
The military noted that the attack targeted Hezbollah's central intelligence body, which is responsible for assessing intelligence information, directing intelligence activities, and, where possible, collecting and identifying intelligence information.
The IDF noted that Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters has a branch in Syria, which includes an independent intelligence collection, coordination, and assessment network.
The direct supervisor of the group's intelligence head is Hassan Ali al-Zaimi, who was eliminated during a recent operation in the Dahiyeh neighbourhood of Beirut.
According to the military, the head of Hezbollah's intelligence unit in Syria, Mahmoud Mohammed Shaheen, was also eliminated in the latest strike.
He held various positions in the group. He became head of the Syrian branch at Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters in 2007, gaining experience over the years and establishing close working ties with the Syrian regime and officials linked to Iran. In this position, he oversaw the development and deployment of intelligence and air defence assets in coordination with various parts of the Iranian axis.
‘Shaheen was an important figure in regional cooperation and his elimination means further degradation of Hezbollah's intelligence capabilities,’ the report said.
The Israeli military also said the IDF had significantly degraded the group's intelligence headquarters in recent weeks. Military intelligence facilities in Lebanon were destroyed and the organisation's ability to gather intelligence information was damaged.
‘The strikes on Hezbollah's military intelligence facilities in Syria have further contributed to operations in Lebanon, undermining the terrorist organisation's intelligence capabilities. With the support of the Syrian regime, Hezbollah endangers the security of Syrian civilians by establishing headquarters and deploying forces in civilian areas across the country,’ the Israel Defence Forces said.
