The island's residents have American citizenship, but cannot vote in presidential elections.
More than half of Puerto Ricans voted to join the United States as a state in a referendum on the island's status, according to local newspaper El Nuevo Día. 56.82% of Puerto Ricans voted for this after processing 91.35% of the votes.
30.85% voted for independence, and another 12.33% for maintaining the current status.
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Caribbean since 1898. The island's residents have American citizenship, but cannot vote in presidential elections. However, the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States has the right to vote. The island has held several status referendums, in which residents voted for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the United States.
