Salome Zurabishvili has announced that she will not leave her post.
The Georgian Parliament has chosen the candidate of the ruling Georgian Dream party, former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili, as president. 224 voters cast their votes for him, the Georgian Central Election Commission reported. 200 votes were needed to win, and there was only one candidate.
The president of Georgia does not have significant powers; he mainly performs representative functions.
Mikheil Kavelashvili is a former Georgian football player, a striker for the Georgian national team and multiple winner of the national championship with Tbilisi Dynamo. In 2016, the athlete was elected to parliament from the Georgian Dream, and in March of this year he joined the Power of the People group, founded by several people from the Georgian Dream.
In 1995, Kavelashvili played for the Vladikavkaz club Spartak-Alania, with which he won the Russian championship. In 1996, he moved to Manchester City, and a year later he was loaned to the Swiss Grasshopper, with whom he also became champion. The last club in his football career was the Swiss Basel, where he played in 2005-2006.
Recall that the current President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili said that she will not leave her post. The head of state said that the presidential elections are not legitimate, and she will not resign until new parliamentary elections are scheduled in the country. Today in Georgia, according to Zurabishvili, only she has legitimate power.
