‘Independence Deputy’ Mikalai Kryzhanouski Passed Away

He was a participant in a hunger strike in the Supreme Council in response to Lukashenka's illegal “referendum”.

Deputy of the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation Mikalai Kryzhanouski has died, the head of the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian Popular Front Zianon Pazniak reported on Facebook.

“Mikalai Kirylavich Kryzhanouski passed away on December 17. He was a Deputy of Independence, a strong Belarusian man, who was wholeheartedly devoted to his Homeland, Belarus. I was lucky to meet many honest, smart, sincere and just people in my life, in the highest meaning of these words. Mikalai Kirylavich was one of them. The most outstanding person,” Pazniak wrote.

Он отметил, что Крыжановский являлся членом депутатской оппозиции БНФ, участвовал в комиссиях парламента, позже работал в Контрольной палате Республики Беларусь, был членом Сойма БНФ и КХП-БНФ, принимал участие в разработке всех основных законов независимости Беларуси.

He noted that Kryzhanouski was a member of the parliamentary opposition of the BPF, participated in parliamentary commissions, later worked in the Control Chamber of the Republic of Belarus, was a member of the Soym of the BPF and the Conservative Christian Party-BPF, and took part in the development of all the basic laws of independence of Belarus.

“Our last mutual work with him and the team of authors was the People’s Program “Free Belarus” (2017) — it was a project of the future, free Belarus, which I have no doubt will be put into life someday. Belarus will flourish, and become free and powerful. In this, the work and the light spirit of Mikalai Kirylavich will live forever. Farewell, dear friend. Our cause has not died and it will never die. Eternal memory,” Pazniak wrote.

Mikalai Kryzhanouski was born on March 1, 1937 in Babruisk. He graduated from the North-West Polytechnic Institute in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). In 1990, he was elected to the Supreme Council. Member of the Supreme Council Commission on the Development of Industry, Energy, Transport, Communications and Information Technology. Member of the Temporary Commission of the Supreme Council on Privileges. Member of the Constitutional Commission. Member of the shadow cabinet (government) of the BPF opposition in the Supreme Council, was a member of the Anti-Corruption Committee.

Participated in the development and adoption of the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Belarus, the preparation of bills for the extraordinary session of the Supreme Council on August 24-25, 1991, at which the independence of Belarus was restored.

Co-author of the Concept of the Transition of the Byelorussian SSR to a Market Economy (autumn 1990).

Participant in a hunger strike on April 11-12, 1995 in the Supreme Council, declared in protest against the “referendum” illegally initiated by Lukashenka on the elimination of the status of the Belarusian language as the only state language, the elimination of the status of state symbols of the Pahonia coat-of-arms and the white-red-white flag, on economic integration with Russia and the right of the president to dissolve the Supreme Council.
