The German Chancellor stressed that nothing can be decided without taking into account the opinion of the Ukrainians.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence in the possibility of reaching an agreement with the newly elected US President Donald Trump on a common strategy for supporting Ukraine.
He said this while commenting on the results of a recent telephone conversation with the Republican, Reuters writes.
“I am confident that we can develop a common strategy for Ukraine. My main principle remains that nothing can be decided without taking into account the opinion of the Ukrainian people,” Scholz noted.
The German politician said that he had a detailed conversation with Trump, during which they discussed issues of security and support for Ukraine. According to him, the Chancellor's team maintains direct contact with the US President-elect's advisers on these issues.
The topic of Ukraine occupies a central place in the political discourse in Germany, especially in the context of early elections scheduled for February 2025. The election comes after the collapse of the three-party coalition led by Scholz, intensifying political strife in the country.
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative opposition, called on Germany to hand over Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. However, Scholz opposed the proposal, saying that such a move could provoke an escalation of the conflict.
