Indians were deceived by recruiters from Dubai.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs appealed to the Russian authorities because of their compatriots caught up in the war in Ukraine. The diplomatic department wants the Russian Ministry of Defense to allow Indians to leave the army without waiting for the expiration of contracts, writes The Hindu.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a number of citizens were recruited to serve as “support personnel.” “The Indian Embassy regularly appeals to the relevant Russian authorities with a request for their immediate dismissal. We urge all Indian citizens to exercise due caution and stay away from this conflict,” said agency spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.
The Foreign Ministry's statement comes after local media reported on February 20 that at least three Indians hired by Russia as “security assistants” were forced to participate in hostilities against Ukraine.
According to sources, 18 Indians are stuck in various frontline cities, including Mariupol and Donetsk. At least one was killed. The Indians were deceived by recruiters from Dubai, who promised them high salaries and Russian passports for participating in “support work,” and when they arrived in Moscow, they were trained to use weapons and ammunition and sent to the front lines.
