Not counting the captured weapons.
Ukrainians may have from one to five million weapons in their hands, not counting captured ones.
This was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klimenko.
“Today we talked about how many weapons our citizens [may] have in their hands. From a million to five million. But a million is also a lot. How many grenades do our citizens have in their hands? Too many. And we must do everything to ensure that these weapons, this ammunition, get into warehouses so as not to endanger citizens,” he said at a meeting of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities under the President of Ukraine.
According to him, today almost all weapons that were issued to citizens are registered.
Klimenko noted that now citizens also illegally have a certain number of captured weapons in their hands.
“But we consciously understand that it should be in the hands of citizens, because there is a war going on. Two weeks ago, in the first reading, [people's deputies] adopted a law that determines what we will do with captured weapons. After this law is voted on in the second reading, every citizen who has this weapon must bring it to the police and register it,” the minister said.
After this, citizens will be able to keep these weapons and ammunition until the end of the martial law regime, the official explained.
“After 90 days after the end of the martial law regime, every citizen must bring this weapon to the police and either hand it over, or emasculate it, or convert it into an authorized type of weapon, etc.,” Klimenko said.
The minister added that now we are talking about the culture of using weapons that Ukrainian citizens have in their hands.
“As soon as we can cultivate this culture among people, then we can discuss the next step in gun ownership. At the same time, we must not forget about the large number of mental disorders among these people who will come from the front, and we will be responsible, the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the first place, for this work,” Klimenko said.
