Vietnam Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong Dies

He ruled Vietnam for 14 years.
General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong died on Friday at the age of 81.
He was at the Central Military Hospital No 108. The day before, he was awarded the Order of the Gold Star.
Nguyen Phu Trong began his political career in 1979 at the regional level, worked in the central executive since 2006, and in 2011 joined the country's main political body, the CPV Politburo. He headed the government from April 2016 to April 2021, then was elected president.
In the same year, Nguyen Phu Trong was re-elected for a third five-year term as general secretary of the CPV Central Committee.
His second five-year term as general secretary was marked by the persecution of the chairman of the People's Committee (mayor) of Hanoi and two government members.
Charter97.org reported yesterday that Nguyen Phu Trong had stepped aside due to poor health.
