The rapid and unprecedented AFU offensive in Kursk region has come as a shock to Russia.

Russian political analyst Sergei Markov said that such a rapid AFU offensive in Kursk region became a real surprise for Russians, and it is a real humiliation for Vladimir Putin. The political scientist said this in a commentary for The Times.

There comes a turning point in the war, which Russia planned to win in a few days, which is a real surprise and a shock for the Russian dictator Putin.

Sergei Makarov, who is a confidant of the Kremlin ruler and has previously advised him on the war in Ukraine, said this to foreign journalists.

"This is a humiliation for Vladimir Putin, and people are certainly not happy. Tens of thousands of refugees have come from these regions.... It is obvious that the Russian army cannot cope with the situation," Markov said.

Analysts estimate that Ukrainian forces, numbering up to 10,000 troops, have already advanced 20 miles deep into Russian territory. The Russian military appears to have been caught off guard by the speed of the offensive, journalists said. The latest developments could lead to the resignation of top military leaders, including the head of Russia's General Staff, Valery Gerasimov.

According to media reports, more than 120,000 Russians have already left the dangerous Kursk region. Russian propagandists have constantly tried to downplay the number of Ukrainian troops on Russian territory to prevent panic.

Russian politicians are increasingly saying that the AFU has managed to break through and quickly seize a large territory in Russia.

"This is a slap in the face for the president. We failed to push back the enemy," an unnamed Russian official told Western journalists.
